People panic when they see water leaking from the washing machine all over their floor. Most people would rush to call their washer service technician to correct the problem. Your washing machine technician will visit your house to rectify the problem with the household appliance. If getting help from washing machine repairman is not an option, you could try to attempt your own washer repair. However, servicing or repairing the machine is not easy, especially, for those who are attempting repairs for the first time. To help you, we will show you how to fix a washing machine that is leaking at home without any help.
The most common places where leaks can occur include the tub, pump, and the house. However, some additional problems may be in areas that are specific to a brand of washing machine. Usually, there are two types of washing machine available in the marketplace – the direct drive and the belt drive. If you don’t find any belts in the machine when you open it, it indicates that it is a direct drive unit.
How to troubleshoot when your washing machine is leaking:
Washing Machine Drain Leak
The first step towards identifying the source of the leak is to empty the machine and move the machine away from the wall. Start the fill cycle and look for drips near the water supply hose that is connected to the back of the machine. If the hose is corroded, you must replace it with new ones. To replace the hose, turn off the water supply coming out of washing machine and unscrew the supply hose that are attached to the back of the machine. Pull out the washers of the old hose using a flat screwdriver. Install the gasket in the new hoses and reconnect the water supply lines.
If the supply hoses are in perfect condition, you must check the condition of the internal hoses. To check the condition of the internal hoses, remove the cabinet and inspect the part. When you open the cabinet, start the filling cycle and check for leaks. You can also look for additional clues like calcium deposits and rust. If there is a leak in the internal hose, you must remove the spring clamp using adjustable pliers. If the spring clamp is worn out, you must replace with a worm-drive clamp. If the hose is leaking, remove the damaged hose and take it to the spare parts dealer for a replacement.
Washing Machine Pump Leaking
The pump will usually leak near the pulley seal. If you notice water leaking from this area, you may have to replace the pump. To replace the pump, disconnect the power and water supply to the machine, and tip the machine up against the wall. Block the front of the machine using a car jack, so the machine cannot tip over when you replace the pump. Now, loosen the bolts that the machine is mounted on to reduce the tension on the belts. If the belt appears to be burnt, replace it as well.
Replace Worn-Out Fittings
The most difficult part is fixing the tub fittings that are damaged. Some of the fittings that causes a washing machine to leak water includes air dome seal, gasket, or tub seal. The steps you have to follow to replace these parts will vary by model and brand. Also, you need some special tools to complete the repairs. If you are unsure about completing the repairs, it is best to get help from an appliance repair technician.
