Problem with a dryer too hot

Have you noticed that when you run the dryer, the heat inside the machine is hotter than normal?

Does the top of the dryer feel hot?

If the answer to these questions is “Yes”, then your clothes dryer must be getting too hot which can damage the clothes and the machine.

Some things to check when your dryer gets too hot:

Before repairing your household appliance, you must understand that there are several parts which can use this problem. You must check each part carefully to identify the problem part. It may not be easy to if the problem has to do with the cycling thermostat, limit thermostat, blower wheel, restricted airflow, partially shorted element, control boards, dryer drum, thermal fuse, thermal cutoff or similar issues. You may need to identify a fault code that indicates a problem like when the thermostat is defective. The issues and possible solutions will vary depending on various factors like if it’s a gas dryer or electric dryers, if it’s a brand like kenmore dryer or whirlpool dryer and so on. A problem when a dryer is overheating could also alternate with another problem of the dryer not heating, especially if that has to do with lack of air flow, so dryers need exhaust vents. Dryers venting procedure is something you may do or get experienced appliance repair experts as well.

When a dryer won’t work because it’s getting too hot, you can attempt to fix it. You can start by checking the lint filter. If the filter is dirty, you must clean out the lint and replace the filter, if necessary. Restart the drying machine and allow it to heat up. If the dryer running hot continues, it is best to switch off the machine and allow it to cool off for a while.

You must check the condition of the vent hose and replace it if it is damaged. To check the condition of the vent hose, unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Now, pull out the vent hose from the back of the machine and check its condition. If you notice, lint build-up inside the hose, remove the lint and clean the hose. Reattach the hose to the machine and push the machine back to its original position. Before you start the machine, make sure the vent hose is attached firmly to the machine, and it did not fall off when you push the machine, back into the previous position.

Most people still use the old-fashioned plastic hoses.  Avoid using the plastic hose as they get damaged easily and are a health hazard. The plastic hose can catch fire when the machine gets overheated. You should replace the plastic hose with the flexible metal hose. The metal hose can be picked up from a local hardware store.

After you replace the hose, start the machine and wait for it to heat up. Once the dryer has heated up, check inside the machine and see if the temperature is too hot. Also, feel the top of the dryer and see if it is too hot.

If the problem persists, you must pull out the dryer once again. The chances are that the vent that runs inside the walls and runs outside the home is clogged. To deal with this problem, you must call a dryer repair repairman or a vent cleaning company to service it for you. These companies use long vents to clean the hose. If the vent exits on the roof, you must check the roof vent as well.  At times, the birds may make a nest in the vent, or it can get clogged with lint. This can block the airflow, which can lead to overheating.

If the airflow is obstructed, it can cause the machine to overheat. If this problem is not addressed, it can destroy the heating element of the dryer. When this problem is addressed, it will not only make the dryer run better, but will also reduce energy bills.
